SUMMERTIME PET CARE TIPS
Summertime is a time for fun but can unfortunately be a danger for our pets when temperatures rise! As a result, we need to take extra caution and make sure that our pets are safe and okay in the heat. Please be advised that heat stroke symptoms may include panting, lethargy, drooling, fever, vomiting and collapse. If you think your pet may have heat stroke symptoms, contact your Vet ASAP!
Here are 4 key tips to help keep your pet cool and safe.
1.Give your pet extra water. You will need to refill your pet’s water bowl more often than usual on very hot days. Offer your pet several ways to cool off by leaving a fan on in a place where your pet has access to cool off around it. Add some ice cubes to his/her water or offer a cool treat.
2.DO NOT leave your pet alone in the car on a hot/warm day. Even with the windows cracked, the inside of a car can heat up to 120 degrees in a matter of minutes on a warm day. Leaving the air conditioning running while your pet and car are alone is no guarantee that either will be safe. Best bet is to leave your pet home or take them with you when you leave your car!
3.Avoid Walking Your Pet in the Heat -“Even in the coolest part of the day, watch for signs of trouble: Glassy eyes and frantic panting may indicate a pet who needs help. Take your pet for shorter walks in the morning or evening. The intense heat of mid-day can overwhelm your pet during a walk. Exercise your pet during the cooler hours and, if your pet is in the sun for an extended period of time, apply pet sunscreen. Outdoor pets should be brought in or provided at least COOL SHELTER, PLENTY OF WATER and SHADE!
4.Keep Your Home Cool for your pets-When the temperature outside gets hot, it can be harder to keep the indoors cool. A hot home can put him in danger! Please leave the air conditioner on a comfortable setting (perhaps 77°F) while you are out.Always remember that older, obese or short-nosed pets are less tolerant of heat.
Also, older pets, young ones and those with health issues can also be more susceptible to hot weather.
Of course, you should keep a close eye on your pet in the heat, no matter what his/her breed, age or state of health. Our pets rely on us to protect them and keep them comfortable and safe year round! Remember, if you’re hot, your pets are definitely hotter!
